Artist Statement

The prints in this series correspond with moments in the video, I Thought I’d Escaped the 20th Century – they were made with the same raw materials, a set of photographic colour gels, a form of detritus from the recent past. The creation of the prints focussed on the qualities that make a strong still image, including a recently-developed form of Kodak Chromira chromogenic paper that has a ‘backlit’ look that relates to today’s screen-based images and other backlit media such as neon and stained glass. They were made within the context and history of still image cultures such as photography and painting, but they’re also in a dialogue with their related video, between the realms of plastic and time-based art forms. In this reaching from one world to another, the prints and video were made as an expression of grief about recent world events. They also create a discourse between the history of camera-less photography and that of large-format painting.
