Seamless video loop, 500 minute, detail

Duration – 500 minute seamless loop (10 minute detail shown)
Video formats – 4K + 1080p HD
Exhibition – lightbox or projection
Soundtrack – silent

This seamless, long-duration video loop was made in the summer of 2017 as an expression of grief about world events – I hoped its perfect wholeness might act as a symbolic antidote. The work is a composed structure of 500 one minute variations. It makes a bridge between the chemically-based visual art tools of the last century (paint, film, and in this case photographic colour gels) and digital generative art. Its thousands of variations were determined by a hybrid process of coding and hand gestures in a quiet, meditative process that took several months. This work is ‘post-durational’, it has no beginning, middle or end, and it relates to the 20th century phenomenon of the ‘large painting’, its expansiveness occurring in time as well as in space.
